Following their standout debut EP Are You ready for Some Music, New York City’’s formidable post-punks Big Kiss lay one on with their sophomore release Great Grief. With Great Grief, Big Kiss dial up the hooks with six high-energy rock tunes that bridge the space between legends like Fugazi and Wire and more modern bands like Protomartyr and Fucked Up. The group churns out bright, punchy, and almighty riffs that tangle and cascade over muscular, driving rhythms as the vocals bark triumphantly front and center. On the introductory track “Great Grief”, Big Kiss serves up subtly muted angular guitars that build into a huge belted chorus spouting “I hope Heaven’s not a hospital”. Other songs like “Larry Davis Eyes” and “Ice Cream Cone (Limitless Cruelty)” are driving numbers that would be a welcomed addition for fans of band like the Marked Men or Hot Snakes.  In total, Great Grief  is wrought with invention. The EP is a powerful next step for Big Kiss, the band reaching further into their bag of tricks, and delivering something truly magical that new fans will revisit again and again.
